Why should I become a member of the Rhode Island Chapter?

Advocacy

  • Increase your knowledge of and participation in legislative and advocacy activities at local level
  • Increase involvement in the legislative arena to positively influence the quality of pediatric health care and the welfare of children in Rhode Island.
  • Build coalitions with other organizations working toward improving children’s health and well-being
  • Promote the interests of Rhode Island pediatricians and other pediatric providers in the American Academy of Pediatrics

Leadership

  • Participate in Chapter leadership committees: Advocacy, Annual Meetings/CME Events, Membership, CATCH Grants, Pediatric Council, Residents/Medical Education
  • Work with key contacts to advance children’s health in areas of interest, such as: adolescent medicine, behavioral health, breastfeeding, child abuse & neglect, climate change, early childhood & development, emergency & safety, perinatal health, immunizations, infectious disease, international health, school health, special health care needs, substance abuse, surgery & subspecialties

Networking

  • Attend local networking events with other pediatricians, subspecialists, health care providers, and government/community leaders
  • Represent Chapter on State committees
  • Represent Chapter on National AAP committees

Education

  • Receive regular Chapter updates and informative communications
  • Attend local and district CME events
  • Prepare for the future role of the pediatrician and other providers in the future health care delivery system

What has your Chapter done lately?

  • Collaborated on numerous grants including; Project Firstline, Healthy People 2030, Abbott Nutrition, AHA Heart Grant
  • Sponsored quarterly Town Halls with Hasbro Children’s Hospital leadership
  • Represented pediatric providers on Governor’s working groups and numerous state committees
  • Sponsored legislative advocacy day for pediatric residents
  • Provided legislative testimony on numerous bills to improve children’s health and well-being, increase pediatric provider payments, and address pediatric provider workforce shortage
  • Tracked over 80 bills per year and provided advocacy mentorship
  • Sponsored CME opportunities and networking opportunities
  • Maintained close working relationship with state agencies such as the Department of Health, state Medicaid, Office of the Insurance Commissioner, and many other community-based organizations.
  • Facilitated bimonthly Pediatric Council meetings
  • Provided members with regular updates on pediatric health, pediatric provider payments, and educational opportunities
  • Offered chapter, state and national leadership opportunities
