Why should I become a member of the Rhode Island Chapter?
Advocacy
- Increase your knowledge of and participation in legislative and advocacy activities at local level
- Increase involvement in the legislative arena to positively influence the quality of pediatric health care and the welfare of children in Rhode Island.
- Build coalitions with other organizations working toward improving children’s health and well-being
- Promote the interests of Rhode Island pediatricians and other pediatric providers in the American Academy of Pediatrics
Leadership
- Participate in Chapter leadership committees: Advocacy, Annual Meetings/CME Events, Membership, Communications, CATCH Grants, Communications, Pediatric Council, Residents/Medical Education
- Work with key contacts to advance children’s health in areas of interest, such as: adolescent medicine, behavior & development, breastfeeding, child abuse & neglect, emergency & safety, perinatal health, foster health care, infectious disease, international health, school health, special health care needs, surgery & subspecialties
Networking
- Attend local networking events with other pediatricians, subspecialists, health care providers, and government/community leaders
- Represent Chapter on National AAP affairs
Education
- Receive quarterly Chapter newsletters and other informative communications
- Attend local and district CME events
- Prepare for the future role of the pediatrician and other providers in the future health care delivery system
What has your Chapter done lately?
- Collaborated on numerous grants including; Screening to Succeed: Developmental Screening Project, the Toxic Stress Project, and PCMH Kids
- Participated on Governor’s Working Group to Reinvent Medicaid
- Held Legislative Advocacy Day for pediatric residents and medical students
- Provided legislative testimony to ban advertising junk food in schools, ban hand-held fireworks, prohibit the incarceration of children age 12 and under, and support low income families by increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit
- Sponsored numerous CME opportunities related to children’s health
- Facilitated bimonthly Pediatric Council meetings
